Hi! Three of my five phals are growing new leaves; one of them is a mini phal with a cut leaf that wasn't taken care of very well. I'm particularly proud of that one. It's taken to full water culture very well.
While I'm really happy with the new leaves I'm concerned they're not really having much root growth. I keep looking for little buds on the stem or green tips but I'm really not seeing much. Is this normal?
Another question is, one of my newer phals has three air roots on it. They seem really dry and crunchy. I've been misting them in the hopes they can bounce back. Any advice on those?
As always thank you everyone for your help. I'm feeling slightly less like an orchid newbie!
Mistking
Looking for a misting system? Look no further. Automated misting systems from MistKing are used by multitude of plant enthusiasts and are perfect for Orchids. Systems feature run dry pumps, ZipDrip valve, adjustable black nozzles, per second control! Automatically mist one growing shelf or a greenhouse full of Orchids.
A plant in water culture has a ready supply, so may not need a great deal more of a root system to keep it satisfied, but you can always treat plants with KelpMax to stimulate root growth.
If the aerial roots are rigid and silvery, but turn green when wet, they're just fine. If they are brown and crusty, the might be damaged, but I'd do nothing different - even old roots can branch.
Hi Ray, thank you for your response. I've heard of KelpMax but haven't used it yet. Except for the mini phal in water culture everything else is in New Zealand sphagnum moss and they seem to like it.
I'm sure part of this is me being a huge worrywart!
