Checking if phalaenopsis dropping flowers are ok
Default Checking if phalaenopsis dropping flowers are ok

Hoping to get some feedback on the health of my two orchids, which I believe are both phalaenopsis. The flowers on both are starting to wilt, which normally wouldn't worry me except that there's been a heat wave where I live (Silicon Valley in CA). Our apartment has been incredibly hot (90-95 F at some points). We've also been keeping all of the blinds closed to try and keep it cool, so they may not be getting enough light. I

n addition, I recently moved them here from Chicago--the move was about a month ago. The apartment typically gets a lot of light, but I'm not sure if the placement is the best. Before the current location I had them in the kitchen across from a north-facing window. In the current location there are both north and south facing windows, but further distance away.

The roots look good, so I'm hoping I have nothing to worry about. The larger one has some brown roots, but I think that's from using tap water.

The leaves seem to be in good condition, so I wouldn't be concerned. They may indeed be reacting to heat, or the blooms are just tired and maybe ready to go. Changes in growing conditions can cause blooms to wilt prematurely. They will probably last longer next time around after they settle in to your new apartment. A north window may not give enough light to bloom the plants though.

The apartment is typically flooded with light, but I can move them to south facing windows (still in the process of moving in a bit). The south facing side of the living room has three windows.

If that’s the case the north facing window may be okay. I have my office Phals in a north facing window overlooking a parking lot which seems to provide a fair amount of reflected light and they bloom like crazy.

Blooms can be sensitive to environmental changes, so just the move alone could have been enough to cause them to wilt. The heat probably didn't help (though not dangerous to the plant) since flower aging will speed up a bit when hot and dry.

I've also kept Phals in a north facing window in the past, and they bloomed well.
