Green roots but the node joints look grim
Default Green roots but the node joints look grim

Hey all,

I'm new to the forum and am excited to delve into the world of owning an Orchid.

We have an orchid that we are trying to maintain and after taking a look at the roots we found quite a bit of root rot that we trimmed.

My question is about the node joints on some of the healthier looking roots; most of the root looks good, but the joints look pretty bad. Is this okay or should we sever the joint. We are currently in the process of soaking the roots in tea overnight and then letting them dry during the day.
Here are some pics

Not the best roots, but I certainly don't see a problem that requires correction. Pot it up in orchid bark, keep on growing.

I agree with OW.

Those aren't really "nodes", they're more likely locations where the root broke without severing the vascular tissue in the core, so they just healed and kept growing.

What is the purpose of soaking the roots in tea?

I had seen that the tannic acid in tea helps trigger root growth. I'm sure the folks on here can elaborate more on that or debunk the notion, if it's not true.

I can find no literature that backs up the tannic acid use.

Just a guess on my part, but I think the concept of using tea as a root growth stimulant results from poorly transmitted info on another home remedy - using willow bark to make tea. The salycilic acid in that can stimulate root growth.

I have heard of some people using crushed aloe as root stimulant. Do you know anything about this? Seems sketchy but you never know.

Another "nope". If you want a real root growth stimulant, check out this.
