My name is Ashley and I’ve dabbled in orchids every so often. Took some time off when I had a baby! But this year my one trusty phal finally bloomed again. This is her third bloom after two years off (she took time off with me!). In summary: I bought her at Home Depot already bloomed, she bloomed again two years in a row, took two off, and now she’s sitting here quite happy with herself. Each year was 6 blooms. I took pictures every year.
But this morning I checked her out and... it seems as if she’s growing an extra bud or two?? Right off the tip of her 6 white blooms is another baby bud.
Based on my research years before, and some quick searching now, I can’t seem to find info on this. Is it a keiki, can it spike from its blooms? Is she just a late bloomer?
Welcome to the board, Ashley! It's funny, I've got a Phal doing the exact same thing right now. It's been in bloom since early January, with one spike and six flowers, and a couple of weeks ago, I noticed a new bud, that is now close to opening, and there's possibly another new one. I've never had this happen before, but it sounds like it's pretty common.
this happened to a phal i bought last year from kroger. Bloomed already when i bought it the flowers fell off and then had some two buds which turned into more flowers! now the spike is drying up. You are doing something right! or maybe I need to go to home depot and get flowering orchids. Because all mine did not bloom this year but created lots of new roots! I did just start using fertilizer like 2 months ago though so that might have something to do with it.
