Phal schilleriana roots rotting
Default Phal schilleriana roots rotting

Hello everyone!

I'm a bit sad.. I purchased this tiny phal schilleriana about 2 weeks ago. I repotted it because it was packed so tightly and the moss smelled a bit. When I repotted the roots didnt look so good. They were starting to rot, some were still green but had black spots throughout.

Repotted in a mix of sphagnum moss and orchid pro mix. I then watered with a seaweed fertilizer and placed it on a seedling mat.

Its potted in a clear flexible pot and I've noticed some of the roots that seemed to be on there way out are in fact dying and the black spots are spreading.

Is there anything else I could do to save this plant or encourage root growth? Really do not want to lose my first species phal!

Patience. Remember, what you see in the way of black spots is on the velamin, the outside coating of the roots that hold moisture. The inner "stringy part" is what actually transmits moisture to the plant, and as long as those are intact the plant can hydrate itself until it grows new roots. (That's why I don't recommend cutting even bad-looking roots) Orchids don't do anything fast.
