Default Tissue Culture Face Up or Face Down?

I was reading in another study that when the explant was placed onto the solid culture medium, it was placed with the adaxial surface in contact with the medium. Is this common practice and if so why? What would be the advantage to adaxial versus abaxial?

For meristem cuts - is that what you're talking about? New growth comes from the cut surface, and you want that growing up into the air, rather than down into the media.

The article stated that she removed the leaf tip of a 4 month old plant (0.5cm in length) and placed the top side of the leaf (adaxial) facing down onto the solid culture medium. The question is why was the topside placed down onto the medium versus the backside of the leaf (abaxial)? Is there a difference?

It might have to do with which surface has more stomata through which the hormones might enter, but I'm only guessing.
