Talking Song of the Orchid or....

Do you play music in your greenhouse or growing area for your orchids? What kind? What's your opinion on the effect it has on them?

I do play a radio 24/7 in my greenhouse mostly because the radio is covered with a Wal*Mart bag to keep the moisture out. It's not so easy to reach in and find the power button. So I leave it on.

For the above mentioned reason, it stays on the same "Oldies" station all the time. I figure I'm an oldie, comparatively speaking of course, I don't really think a person should be considered old til they approach the century mark. (my kids disagree ) And I collect mostly Oldie catts.

I do think the 'girls' enjoy their music but I don't have any proof of this.

I do know there is a crowd around the greenhouse every night. A small herd of deer (10) lay close by. If the radio is real low, the deer move closer and if it's loud, which it sometimes gets very loud all on it's own, the deer move further away.

So, how about you? Got tunes?

I have my local NPR station on when I'm home. I don't know if my orchids notice, but I've seen my twenty year old box turtle sit in the middle of the floor, and stare at the speakers when Mozart is playing.

I play ozzie osbourne for mine. After the first week they were wearing black lipstick and heavy eyeliner. Joking aside, I immagine that a little mozart would do them just fine. For my pups, which are kennelled up in the same room as my chids, I play classical when I am gone. They are always much more relaxed on my return than if I had left no music. The orchids dont seem to hate it. Maybe its worth a shot. Perhaps you should do a study with meristems. 5 of each in a control and an experimental group and report back.

I find it all very interesting -
Here are few short stories on this subject -
The DoveSong Foundation -- The effect of Music on Plants (The Plant Experiments)
What effect does music have on plant growth?
Plants and Music
The book 'The Secret Life of Plants' also discusses this ..

I have a Homedics machine I got from a dept. store that plays sounds. It plays tropical rain forest, ocean, water falls, night sounds (frogs & crickets) and a heartbeat. I always play the rain forest setting which helps me tremendously. I also play classical music for the chids.
I don't have a greenhouse, but a heated sunroom where I keep most of my chids. My orchids love the music...I catch them grooving to the tunes every so often when I walk into the room unannounced. Oh ya!

Dorothy

That is so interesting. I may try playing music for my plants, and me, in my plant room. Thanks

I don't need to smoke anything. I get high on life! And next you're going to ask me how I keep it lit!
