Phaius? orchids

Here in Maryland they can be hard to find - usually a few available at orchid shows or good nurseries. They are great plants - I started with a P. tankervillae, and now have several different cultivars and a phaiocalanthe (which I find more challenging but still not impossible).

Did you go back and buy it?

The Phauis that i have is not a hybrid. It is the original Phauis tankervillaea.It grows wild where i live
i have never heard of Phauis tankervillaea mishmense
what does it look like?

I purchased the mishmense from Clanorchids in Sarasota.
I haven't had it long enough for it to bloom but it looks like a smaller version of the grandiflora. I 'll be interested to see what the flowers look like. I assume mishmense is a hybrid but I believe the grandiflora is a species. I''l let the more senior orchid people answer the question I am a newbie. Regards

I agree; very easy to grow.Treat it like a houseplant.
Watch out for spider mites however.They are very prone to mites if humidity is low,because of their thin plicate leaves.
Better to prevent than to have to deal with them.

Phaius is an easy orchid and the flowers are pretty, too. I like that it is semi-terrestrial but you do have to watch for rot. If you have the space, you will be happy with this orchid. Found mine at a local Home Depot.

I grow my Phaius tankervillae outdoors in raised well drained beds in partial shade and come late November, they are then in full flower, these last till mid-January. When in the growing stage, they need to be well watered with an addition of 1/4 dose of fertilizer with every second watering. Careful not to leave any water standing overnight on the plants since they generally like to sleep dry. For use indoors, I grow them in pots that are also very well drained. The new hybrids between Phaius and Calanthe are also very beautiful and fun growing.

I already have a number of the EFG Orchids' Phaius and Phaius Calanthe crosses. All of them are doing very well when grown in pots. Now I am looking for some Calanthes and Calanthe hybrids that appear to be hard to find, so presently really looking forward to attending the Redlands Orchid Show next month when I hope to find some more of these very interesting orchids for sale.

I have gotten some frome efg too. Not cheap, but terrific quality. Bought some little ones from a different vendor on ebay, most of them came with scale.

Pronounce: FAY-us
They do well in old cymbidium mix or new with a bit of peat and rotted cow manure added. Half shade to full sun. Water a lot in growing season, but must be well-drained. Reduce water in dormant season, but never allow to dry completely.
