Some, but not all of my catts, create new growths whose leaves do not expand and open up and their pseudo bulbs do not thicken. The new unfurled leaf looks like a knife blade. Yet other catts do not have this problem. Does anyone know what is going on?

It sounds like it is sticking at the edge with the "rounded top-edge." They come out with 2 halves closed and then pop open, but they do tend to "stick" for a while. (I hope you can visualize what I am saying). I would raise the humidity of the area with a mister. This is also recommended when flower petals seem stuck together. Do not let water get in between the leave halves though. The leaves seem to come out first, followed by a skinny pseudobulb which will later fill in. Many cattleyas of certain kinds have long narrow pseudobulbs that do not thicken much, on the other hand, many also have very fat p-bulbs.

Thank you, Optimist, for your quick and knowledgeable opinion. Yes, I visualize your description to confirm you understand my catt problem. Hmmm, not enough humidity? You may be right. However my solarium has a sand floor and I have a faucet and hose in there and I am in the habit of both watering the floor and misting heavily every day. But you still may be correct. As you mentioned low humidity will also cause flower tips to stick together prior to fully opening and I have noticed that also even though I have two ceiling fans than run 24/7.
I so much appreciate your help. Thank you!

This can also happen if you don't water them enough. Cattleyas generally shouldn't get completely dry when pushing new growth, or when in bud.
