Ray, The epson salts and calcium nitrate might add something to the media that helps but I dont think the benefit is the extraction of salt. It certainly doesnt hurt anything as I followed you advise when I first saw the post. I soak my chc and drain repeatedly until ther is no brown color in the water and grow very salt senastive plants in it. No longer using the chemicals for that purpose.
