Default MSU Fertilizer vs. Green Jungle Orchid Food

I was just on a website called orchidweb.com that I am sure many are familiar with and saw a fertilizer called Green Jungle Orchid Food. While I am not looking for a new fertilizer, I am just curious what the difference is between it and MSU Fertilizer? I can find plenty of info on MSU Fertilizer, but not much on the Green Jungle? I tried searching on here and didn't come up with much, as well as searching on Google. Can someone help me? Perhaps I will need to wait for Ray on this one....I hope his surgery went well!

Hi, Becca.

Everything went fine, but I am having to stay on Percoset for another day or two, and typing with one hand is the pits! Thanks for asking.

As there is no label or analysis shown, there is no way to know for sure, but based upon the description and the dosage, it makes me think that it's simply the MSU formula dissolved on water. If I am correct, then it costs 67% more than the stuff I make up.

Wow 67% more! I think it is kind of odd that it doesn't show a label or an analysis. O-well! Thanks for answering so quickly! Glad to hear everything went well! May you have a speedy recovery!

I'm sorry Ray, I didn't hear about your surgery. I hope it was nothing serious, and I'm glad it went well.

I am using the MSU fertilizer that I got from you. I got the 'well water' type even though I am using Detroit City water. It will still work won't it? I use it quite diluted with every watering. (every other day)

Did you get to the Lansing show?

Take care.

Hi Everyone

Green Jungle was developed at the University of Minnesota under the direction of Jerry Fisher for Orchids Limited. (best known for Prag 'Jason Fisher')
Green Jungle has a 1-0-1 content and is used at a 1:100 setting. It was designed to work with rain, distilled and RO water and to be used with every watering.
While under development they did sell it dry. After green Jungle name went on the label it was only sold as a liquid.
I have used several gallons of Green Jungle but do prefer MSU 13-3-15 for RO water. I did feel that something was missing in the growth of the plants using Green Jungle.
If you had to buy MSU premixed in a gallon jug you would pay about the same price. Water is expensive.

Thanks, Jayme. It's always nice to have facts!

I agree that water adds to the cost and shipping expense, but considering the relative inhomogeneity of the MSU fertilizer powders, for a small grower, it may be the better option.

I make up 25% liquid versions of the MSU formulas, which results in 3.25-0.75-3.75 for the RO formula. As I recommend finding a formula good for the plants and then controlling your dosing by the nitrogen level, If I wanted to price that to be equivalent to the Green Jungle stuff, I'd have to charge over $32 a quart!

Chris - you got the right formula. The "well water" descriptor is intended to apply to any non-pure-water source.
