Question - Wood Vanda Baskets

I have left a message with 3 different vendors asking this question. No one has answered me so I'll try asking here. Hopefully someone will answer my question.

Will a 5" pot fit into a 6" octogan shaped wood basket? I have a couple of vandas ordered which I have been told will be in 5" pots. I would like to place the pot into an octogonal wood basket. I need to order the baskets and don't know what size to order. I'm not sure if the 6" measurement is an inside or outside measurement. I prefer not to use a larger basket unless necessary.

I prefer not to disturb the roots anymore than necessary, at least until they adjust to my growing area.

A 5" pot might fit. The tapered shape of the pot might nestle in quite nicely. Good luck!

For the wooden baskets I have seen, the stated dimension is the outside, so I'd probably go to an 8" size.

Marilyn, I have both and just tried it. The 5" round pot fits perfectly into the 6" octogonal wooden basket, however, the 5" pot sticks up further, about 1 3/4" from the top of the wooden basket. Hope that helps. Good luck!
I would think that if you soaked the vanda roots, then removed to the wooden basket, it would be fine. I would just wait a week or two first. Just my 2 cents.

I agree with Ray. I have the "6" and 8" size octogan baskets. A 5" pot should fit in the 6" which is really 5 1/2" in the 8" it's 7 1/2" inside. My vandas are in the larger square baskets and they are happy. I'd go with the 8".

You have been a big help. What I want to do is keep it in the pot until it has time to adjust to my conditions. I plan to place the pot into the hanging basket so I can hang it under my lights, where it will eventually hang, after I repot it bare root into the basket.

Today I spent 1/4 tank of gas searching for a place to buy wood baskets. Everyone said I am too early because they are an outdoor item. I didn't find baskets, but I found something else, (which cost WAY too much) to hang my blooming plants on in my living room. My common sense went out the window.......I bought it. I'll take a picture later to post.

I forgot, you might want to try a wire basket. WalMart has them most of the time in their indoor garden area. It comes with a cocoa mat but you can just remove it. It would be perfect for letting the roots hang out. They are black finished with scroll work on them. I just planted a couple schombos in the ones I bought using the liner. I have pics in the gallery.

I use a lot of these for the specimen sized plants. The plastic "net" baskets are to coarse for the bark I use. Waterlily baskets are just perfect. Available in a wide variety of sizes and shapes at PONDLIFE PLANT BASKETS
