Not sure about your Phals but Vandas need warmth and lots of water, especially during growing period and summer months. I water every day during summer as there is not potting mix, only in a hanging basket. It is now winter here in So. Ga. and I water only once in 3 or 4 days. Several are in bloom right now. They are fairly heavy feeders also. Mine are in a greenhouse during winter but I hang mine outside in summer.

Both types of plants need warmth, humidity, and copious amounts of water, and vandas need a lot of light too, so that suggests you are simply trying to grow plants not suited to your conditions.

If you can find a way to enclose them to some extent - even putting them in an open plastic bag will help - it will help retain some humidity around the plants after watering, but you're going to want to keep them from going below about 15°C.

Hi,

I think it is not the best way to cultivate vandas in glasses, especially if they sit so low in the glass. It is true they need a higher humidity, but it is also true they need plenty of fresh air. So IMHO they tend to rot too easily in glasses, they colder the more.

I would try to hang them freely, mist the roots daily and soak them twice a week for 20 min in rain water with fertilizer, ~ 400µS/cm conductivity.

And you will need a fungicide against the rot.

Temp won't kill your vanda very quickly. Ive proven that allready with my 10 C nightemps for 3 months. A friend of mine has a vanda too which is showing the same symptoms though. His temps are dropping way below that and he is having a huge lack of light. He got rid of the problem by fertilizing the plant and putting it closer to the window. I have seen the plant not so long ago and it is growing healthy again. Do you fertilize? to what direction is your window facing?

GLASSES :
I bought it in glass as decoration . I understand the best is to keep rots in fresh air. But it doesnt look so much interesting in flat , you know

Window :
I have orchids on window where is strongest sun (light) from 10am - 3pm , I fertilize plants once every second week , but I didnt fertilize now - during winter , I want to start next week .
I hope it will ok ...

Perhaps it is a pathogen problem. I examined your photos closely. Do you spray the plants leaves with water as well. If so you may have got yourself some nasty erwinnia germs. Otherwise try to hang the vanda's in the open air freely. Somehow the roots like that much more. Did you meassure your temps exactly? Maybe your temps are dropping way below 10 C at night. Everything below 10 is getting critical. I used to table temps like this:

50 C - Critical temp, watering won't help you any longer
40 C - Adjust before its too late
30 C - water alot and let nature do the rest
25 C - I understood that this is the tropical temp thus ideal
20 C - Near ideal, water and enjoy
15 C - Try heating up a little, plant will grow roots and new leaves
10 C - Plant stops growing and will start trowing leaves if exposed too long (like 2-3 weeks)
5 C - critical temp, exposure longer then 4 hours will damage roots and leaves and eventually kill the plant
<5 C - Immedate death. No rescue possible

Now this is comming from my experiences with a variety of plants. I may be wrong about it. So far my vanda is still alive but anything can still happen

Your phalas should be immortal so they are simply overwattered or in the wrong substrate. I never have seen a phala die and I have seen them bloom at conditions even my cacti would die in.

Anyone correct if Im talking crap. I am still learning after all those years. Hope this info helps
