Name for dark red color form?
We all know alba/album, flava/flavum and coerulea. Does anyone know, whether there is a name for dark red color forms (such as exists in Rhynchostylis gigantea)?

Usualy "rubra/um" that means "red" in ancient Latin,
or else you can use "purpurea/ureum": it's a dark red, like blood and not a violet, such as the english "purple" means. Purpurea/um was the ancient color used by the richest ancient romans to their dresses because it was very rare, and wash resistant. https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porpora

Thanks for comments. Purpurea (& atropurpurea) tends to define the almost black version, but rubra fits what I am trying to express.

Sometimes the epithet sanguinea will be used to
describe a darker red orchid.
The implication is a blood red coloring, which is usually a darker red.

In the case of Paphs., you might see vinicolor (wine color). I don't know if this would apply to other genera.

"Yo, vini!", comes to mind.
Sorry, a moment of silliness overcame me.

Vinicolor is also used in reference to Cattleya.

Thanks for reminding me. I have read about C. intermedia aquinii 'Vinicolor' in Carl Withner's "The Cattleyas and their Relatives", Vol. I.

In Cattleyas the 'vinicolor' tends to describe a flower with standard color, but intensely red lip.
I have seen it used for 'Maudiae' type hybrids, with red stripes on red dorsal (and usually red petals & slipper also).
For Rhy gigantea I still think that 'rubra' describes the red version best. Then we an continue with a discussion about names for all the other new color forms.
