Re-potting Timing Results (Pictures)

My first post!

I got this NOID orchid on discount after its blooms fell for 7$ its initiated 2 new growths. I have inspected the potting medium do you know what it is? it looks like dirt!? I am so worried about over-watering because of this media however the roots somehow seam healthy.

I have a medium grade orchiata bark in the house along with LECA Pro-AGRA for S/H growing.

My question is when do I repot and with what?

i took another look it looks like osmunda or some type of moss that has seriously degraded

Welcome to the Orchid Board! That's a nice plant you got, for a nice price It will be exciting to see what it looks like when you nurse it to blooming health!

The medium certainly is very degraded. Usually, regardless of the growth stage of an orchid, if the medium is that bad I'd repot it immediately. Fortunately for you, the plant is beginning to put out some new growths, which means it will soon be making new roots. This is important, because old roots don't adjust well to drastically different conditions, so you could end up losing a portion of the root structure until new roots grow into the new medium.

As far as what medium to use, it will really be up to you, your watering schedule, and your growing conditions. Your orchid appears to be some kind of oncidium, so I would suggest choosing a medium mixture that can retain a bit more moisture than what you'd use for a phalaenopsis or cattleya. Perhaps some of the bark with a small amount of sphagnum mixed in?

I think the medium is some kid of house plant potting mixture (peat, sand and perlite.) This can be successful for some orchids with finer roots for a year or two, but potting soils tend to compact and lose the air spaces. Your plant is an Oncidium hybrid which does not like becoming too dry at the roots, and this medium is OK for this kind of orchid for a while. This kind of potting medium would quickly kill Cattleyas, Dendrobiums or Phalaenopsis.

I bought an oncidium intergeneric (brassidium) with what looks like the same media (to me, it appears to be what estación seca describes). The grower for mine is Matsui Orchids. It's in bloom with a second spike growing, so I wasn't sure I wanted to disturb with a repot at this time, but watering IS tricky.
