Help with new orchid terrarium Male
Default Help with new orchid terrarium

OK, someone gave me a chandelier. I used some of the beveled glass to make a terrarium. See the photo. The base is 10 inches square; the sides are 10 inches high. I'd like to use this as a terrarium for a few miniature/compact orchids.

I have discovered lots of conflicting information about how to create/maintain an orchid terrarium, so I'm reaching out for advice.

Here is what I am THINKING about doing:
- a 2 inch layer of smooth multi-colored stones, boiled to make sure they are clean.
- I'll add about 1 inch of distilled water
- on top of the stones, I'll place mats of live sheet moss
- I have several options for adding orchids: Angraecum didieri, Amesiella monticola, Angraecum florulentum, and Trichopilea tortillis x sib
- I have a small piece of cholla wood, a small piece of grapewood, and a large piece of cork bark that could be used to mount the orchids.
- Because the terrarium tapers to about a 4 inch opening, I'm thinking that a small piece of glass could serve as a 'cover' to keep the terrarium at a relatively constant humidity level for the moss and the orchids.

I would appreciate any suggestions and advice. Thanks.

Air circulation and light are also necessary. Too much light on a closed terrarium can raise the temperature too high. You might not need to close the top completely or at all.

It is cute but that is what I worry about, if it would get enough air flow.
