Mycorrhizae are fascinating, thanks for starting this thread! Modern cloned orchids seem to get their start in sterile conditions and would seem to need to somehow acquire the proper mycorrhizae to flourish. On the other hand, every other kind of fungus in my life seems to be able to spread itself just fine without any outside help. So I wonder if these very specific orchid fungi will spread within your collection, once any one plant is inoculated? Anyhow, please keep us posted on how your experiment works out. I'm new so can't post links yet, but try looking up David Moore's mycology site+ orchid mycorrhizas.

Folks:
The US expert on orchids and their mycorrhizal associations is Dr. Dennis Whigham of the Smithsonian Institution. I heard him speak at a college near me, and the presentation and slides were fascinating. They are just beginning to understand such associations in native orchid species. Any paper published by him would be a good read if you are interested in orchids.
