odontocidium hans isler spiking - Orchid Board

hello,

i have an odontocidium hans isler (pretty sure) that is spiking for the first time under metal halide. 3 spikes! is this too many? should i clip 1 or 2 or just let them all go?

also, once it blooms i would like to put on display in my cafe under just ambient regular lights. will this shorten flowering time or have any other negative effects??

Not sure what to tell you, as I don't have one of these 'chids myself.
That's pretty impressive to have so many spikes! I'm jealous!

I don't have that one, but I have a Rehfieldara that is quite large with three spikes plus other spikes veering off the three. I have never seen anything like it. It has Ada x Ondontoglossum x Oncidium....so I think that is close to yours???? I haven't cut anything and it seems to be doing great. I also have it in my high light window for now, but I've been told that once they blossom, to not have it in high light, because it will make them go by faster. I move my Cattleyeas to a little less light when they open to get a longer lasting blossoming time from them.
So I think you are doing okay by bringing it in under regular lights once opened. But understand that I am no expert! I am just following my gut.

Didn't see this earlier. Don't ever clip spikes. More is better (that's kinda like more roots is better

) The plant will produce what it is capable of. Let it grow. Just my

Hansueli Isler is actually the full name of mine. Its wild, the first spike I didnt even see till it was about 6" long cause it grew right up inside one of the leaves! So cool. So yeah Ill just let all 3 do their thing and move them when they bloom.

BTW, Kiki, nice maypop in your gallery! So funny Im trying to get one going on my orchid shelf.
