If this is the Don Herman of AOS reknown who passed away some years ago, then it may well be that the mix he used may not reflect some of the available ingredients we use in mixes today. Depending on what you are growing and where you are growing it will determine what will work best for you. As I recall, he was best known for catts and probably used a primarily bark mix. The problem here is that the bark available 20 - 30 years ago, is not the same bark available today.

Two people who might give you a better lead would be Milton Carpenter in Florida and Norito Hasagawa in California. Both are well known hybridizers in their respective orchid genera.
