Dendrobium parvulum - Orchid Board

I was lucky enough to also get this little jewel Den. parvulum "violet blue" cost me an arm and a leg but i'm very excited to have it. The seller did advise about how to grow it but as always I would appreciate any feedback from my fellow members. I have it mounted to the outside of a clay pot with some moss and would like to know more about what it likes to bloom. Temperature drop, light intensity etc.

I don't grow this, but my Dendrobium book says that "moist, intermediate, moderately bright conditions suit it well"

I hope some other members will be able to better assist you.

As one does when hearing of an orchid that one has not heard of before , I did a net search. Not many details on your plant , but I did find it on a German ebay site and a Spanish one . A few Chinese sites ?
Anyway , I was wondering what is special too you about this plant ? I'm always interested in hard to find plants and what there qualities are . Is it worth the hunt ?

It was also good to see it on the German ebay as we will move to the Netherlands in July.

Yes my searches have not revealed much more than yours.

The flowers are a pretty violet colour which is a treat but what I really like about this plant is it's small size and growth habit (mat like ). I saw it years ago and have wanted it since then. Part of the attraction might have something to do with how hard it is to find so it's like a trophy of sorts.

Whether or not it's worth the hunt is completely on you and how much you "need" the plant.

Always worth the hunt. Am I correct in thinking that blue colour for a Dendrobium is rare ? I was reminded of the quest for a blue hardy waterlily, they just do not exist . Or I maybe out of date , there was a post years ago about a blue hardy in Cyprus .
I had a fine collection of Kirk Strawn hardy hybrids when we lived in France . They are now in a pond in England at a friends house. So after seven years in the USA I can go to my friends and get divisions from the original plants and take them to Holland. Once I build a pond that is. I wonder if I can stash my orchid collection with someone here and come back in a few years for divisions

I'm glad you found your plant after all that time. I'm sure you can make your arm and leg back in trades or selling divisions

You are correct in your assumption regarding the blue colour but that was only one of the factors that attracted me to it.

It's a coincidence you mention a pond because I am currently in the process of building one. Other than aesthetic appeal the only reason I'm building it is to put goldfish in it so I can use the poop filled water for my plants.

I hope all works out for you in Holland. I know they have some pretty amazing stuff there and the vivarium hobby is pretty advanced there. You will have access to some stuff i can only drool over.

I'm sure you can find people to keep divisions for you. If I lived closer I would help you out

MAli, when you figure out how to upload and post with your Mac please give us a picture of your orchid if you can. I would love to see it.

Yup, out of date. Nymphaea 'Siam Blue Hardy' was developed a few years back, and should be released commercially in the next few.

Thanks, I have two friends locally who have taken a bunch of plants. So a few Banked as it were.
