An area Hydroponic store is gearing down/closing and they have several organic based fertilizers. The one that interested me was the Bat/Seabird Guano. Has anyone used this or something similar?
Thanks for any input.....
I've used denatured poultry manure pellets on my catasetinae to great effect; of course they can take as much fertiliser as you can give them in the growing season. I am also using horse manure as a potting mix layer with great preliminary results. Not sure if the guano is a top dressing or a mix, but if you can stand the smell ( if any ), then you should try it out on those orchids that appreciate fertiliser.
This is a powdered mix that you add to water. There is little smell - more "organic" fragrance than "fishy" or "poopy" smell - there has been some processing of it obviously.
Thanks Orchidarefun - and it is interesting what you are using. It sounds pretty heavy on the nitrogen present in manure - have you had any issues with burn or rampant growth, but few blooms?
I used the poultry pellets last year, together with bone and blood meal and dynagro 90 day extended release fertiliser. Lots of growth....and blooms. Remember this was with catasetinae and a couple of zygos. The one catt that I treated had multiple growths and blooms, so it was a success with that genera too. All were outdoors for the summer with the above fertiliser top dressing as a once off.
This year I am repotting my catasetinae into a horse manure mix and will probably top dress too. I was worried about burn but that didn't happen. I think that rain and fairly constant watering helped. All my other orchids indoors only get fertilised around 1x per month. The less is more principle and I adopted this after speaking to a lot of people at Orchid Shows ( with great blooms ) about their routines.
