We maybe moving to the Hague in the Netherlands. Looks like there will be some very good Orchid nurseries in Holland and two to four hours drive away in Germany. I guess there is no way I can take my plant collection from here to there ? Anyway I was wondering if what is available here in the US is also available in the EU ?
As I just ordered a few plants from Sun Vally Orchids , I'm guessing most of those are not available in Holland . I could pay the extra shipping a cert costs to get some SVO plants to Europe. Or even get a group to order a bunch and split costs. I think what I'm looking for is someone to express the up side of going to Europe in Orchid terms.

Could you look into importing your own plants? It would be nice to bring them as carry ons in a boxes when you fly over.

I don't think you will have a hard time finding orchids in Europe they are popular over there too.

To officially move a collection, you will need a phytosanitary certificate, and it makes life easier if there are no CITES restricted species in the collection. I don't know how a private individual goes about obtaining that. Check with Dept of Agriculture in your state.

Unofficially, you can transport a small collection in your luggage. European countries are not really concerned about transport of a few plants, the way the US is. However, if you plan to come back, you may have difficulties getting plants into the US.

In Europe you will find many of the same plants (hybrids), but not all. You will also find some plants, which you can't get in the US due to CITES regulations/interpretations (this primarily applies to Paphs). There are local breeders, so you will also find some hybrids not available in the US.

When I lived in Denmark, there were a couple of OS members, who would organize joint imports from various suppliers in the US. That minimized the freight & documentation fees for each buyer. Suggest you contact the local OS in advance to check on this.
