Hi, all, I posted a picture under "Christmas shopping at Orchids by Marlow" of my mounted Howeara. It is my first experience with a mounted orchid and I am finding myself either dunking or misting everyday because it seems to dry out so quickly. I was wondering if I'm doing the right thing. Also wondering if I could transfer it to pot culture so I wouldn't have to water it every day. Do you think it would do ok in a pot ? and if so, when would be the time to move it ? It is currently on a wood mount with just a little bunch of moss (looks like live moss, not sphagnum) under the roots. The roots seem to be well attached to the wood. The roots turn white soon after watering or misting and I just water until they turn green.
Mistking
Looking for a misting system? Look no further. Automated misting systems from MistKing are used by multitude of plant enthusiasts and are perfect for Orchids. Systems feature run dry pumps, ZipDrip valve, adjustable black nozzles, per second control! Automatically mist one growing shelf or a greenhouse full of Orchids.
I see this one in pots all the time so you don't need to keep it mounted. The best time to pot it up is when it is starting new growth.
Another alternative is to set the mount in a food storage container and keep a little water on the bottom so that it wicks up the mount. If there is quite a bit of moss, you can remove some so that the roots don't rot. I do this with the mounted orchids that need more water.
I have mine in a clay pot in lava rock, and I water it every day. It has long since outgrown the pot, but it keeps growing and flowering, so I see no reason to move it - until I decide to divide it.
