vanda tesselata dropping leaves

Hello guys! I need help in figuring out the cause of my near blooming size vanda dropping it's leaves. I purchased this spring of this year and I have it under 4x2' HO t5's. It is growing along side my other vandas and this is the only one showing this much stress. One leaf would drop once a week but the past two weeks had been worse dropping three leaves...

Is this a warm-growing Vanda? Some Vandas drop leaves if they experience cooler temperatures or less light than they prefer. I have never grown this one so I had hoped someone else would help you. Good luck!

the temperature i keep it in is in the intermediate side.. around 70-80F. It is hanging high up near the lighting. I added more humidity to see if this would solve the problem. My other vandas are growing fine and flowering too and this is the only one I am having problems with.

I think there is too much moss in the pot. In florida, we grow them hanging without any potting material. But may be someone from your area can give better advise.

I'm a noob. What do I know? However, I was told most strictly. "If you must pot a vanda, pot it in large bark chunks and nothing else. Pot it in spaghnum, and it will suffer a slow death."

Mine are on stands with their roots in the air.

I had put moss around it to keep some moisture in because the air around my pad is dry and the moss dries out at night and dry and crunchy in the morning. It's just a tiny amount of moss topping.

if your moss is drying out over night then your humidity is WAY too low. I have moss on all my vandas bec they were drying out too fast. Not potted in moss just a moss topcoat to keep the top fresh. Indoors I never had luck with the vanda types. Was not sunny ,hot humid and stikky enough for them IMO.

But good luck on your endeavor to grow these under lights.



They do much better in the greenhouse. Even spanish moss grow on them.. I love moss!!!

They do much better in the greenhouse. Even spanish moss grow on them.. I love moss!!!

I only keep my vandals indoors in the winter but I had success flowering them under lights too. I increased the humidity around it using a humidifier and see if that changes anything. Your greenhouse looks neat!

Spanish moss isn't actually a a moss, but it does like to grow with orchids.

Could you be over watering it? I mist mine daily but only water when it is dry. I have grown vandas with moss in the basket and it does help to keep them from drying too much. You could always try vase culture to see if it helps. I only water once a week with vase culture and mist the rest of the time. See if you can fit the basket into the top of a vase.
