On some of my miniature orchids potted in NZ sphagnum moss there is a heavy growth of dark green algae. Does Algae thrive on Nitrogen? If so, is it preventing my orchids from getting Nitrogen when I fertilize?

I think you will find that reducing the phosphorus has more impact than reducing the nitrogen.

If it grows so heavily that it clogs airflow into the potting medium, it could be a problem, but other than that, it's of no particular consequence.
