Same here...I totally get it.

BTW -- love the "plaque" you used for the mount.

About the dendrochilum fragrance, a friend and I once decided they smell like Pine Sol—a nice enough scent, but with a chemical quality to it.

Since I said that I couldn't describe its scent, I have stuck my nose into it numerous times and had the wind blow it to me almost as often.
Even from the first time, it has been familiar, but not truly identifiable.
My initial description was "medicinal".
I've read it described as "spicy".
My nose thinks both are a close description.
After much thought about it, I smell a hint of cloves in it.
Just a hint, mixed into a collage of other odors I can't quite identify.
I like it.
It's pleasant, yet not quite pleasant.
it keeps me busy checking and rechecking it trying to nail it down.

Wow, nice & you gotta throw in fruit, sausage and eggs? I'm forgetting for a minute that it's in the 40s out right now... thanks for the dreaming (& sharing)!

12 Step Program means park closer to the entrance to a greenhouse so you only have 12 steps to get your Orchids to the car.

Hawai'i is a very seductive place.
Now, before I seduce anyone into packing up and moving here, there are some very BIG CAVEATS to be considered.

First, look at where Hawai'i is on a map.
It is smack in the middle of the Pacific Ocean [nowhere], a long ways from anywhere.
It is remote, and all that implies!
I lived in Alaska for over 30 years.
It is also remote, or at least was more-so than now when I first moved up there.
Living in Hawai'i has its similarities to living in Alaska, excepting climate.
In Alaska there was a class of people we called Sourdoughs: Sour on Alaska without enough dough to get out.
Hawai'i has a similar category of people trapped here.
They're always whining, crying, sniveling and moaning about how much they hate it here.
Be informed without any doubts in your mind before packing up and moving to Paradise.
Paradise can be hell for those not suited to it.

EDIT:
Also, are you willing to deal with lava flows?
We're looking at being cutoff from the rest of the island by a lava flow.
Some people will loose their homes to the lava flow if it doesn't stop or change direction.
Best case scenario is a 3/4 hour drive to town being extended to 2 hours or more, IF they get a new road built in the area where the lava used to flow before moving to where it's at now.
If a new road doesn't get built, we'll remain cut off, and have to build a new economy for our area.
We'll be even more remote than we are now.

You're trying to convince us not to move there so you can have all the bargain orchids for yourself! I'm not falling for your reverse psychology

Ah, sourdoughs. LOVE that. The UK term for people who leave the UK is expat, and expats tend to group together and you always get some in there that whine that things are better in the UK and they make no effort to integrate... etc etc etc.

We had looked at several "expat" community areas in Central and South America before finalizing our plan on Hawai'i.
We weren't all that serious about locations other than Hawai'i.
But, we did look at some, finally deciding that we didn't want to deal with a radical change in politics, culture or language.
Learning the pronunciation of Hawai'ian names placed on everything around here was hard enough to do.

Since my post with the admonitions something else has come up.
Two months ago, Iselle was the first hurricane to hit Big Island since the 1870's.
Now there's another tropical depression formed that is expected to grow to hurricane strength.
It is being forecast as heading for the same area Iselle landed on Big Island.

This was not part of my contract when I signed on.
But, I'll deal with it if I have to.

Before deciding on Hawai'i I had looked at this map:
UXBlog | IDV Solutions' User Experience: Hurricanes Since 1851

Hawai'i looked to be just out of the hurricane track.
But, niggling away in the back of my mind was the thought that global warming could possibly push that track to the north a bit.
Maybe so?
