Very good chance that the spike will send out a new branch at one of the nodes. Basically the tip of a spike sends hormones downward in the spike that suppress development of the nodes below into branches. When the tip of the spike is gone, the nodes below are no longer inhibited.

I'm sorry about your misfortune. I've done that many times and I always swear that I'll be more careful and then I wind up doing it again. Hopefully you'll get a secondary spike to display. Good luck.

Yep, I've broken off spikes, and sometimes just buds, more times than you'll ever get me to admit.

Been there done that! LOL! Most recently this past Thanksgiving. I had a mini hybrid phal in full bloom. I took it with me to my sister's place to give to my mom for her to enjoy while it was in bloom. I've done this the last couple years with that phal. When it is done blooming I take it back. Got all the way to my sister's house without incident. Getting out of the car, I was hurrying, reached for the plant and snapped the spike right off. Was soooo not happy.

Unfortunately it happens to us all from time to time. Not that long ago I had a first bloom seedling that I've been growing for a few years which finally spiked and then after a few weeks broke off the spike.

Recently my top heavy FDK After Dark toppled to the right side and snapped off the spike and as I tried to grab it and stabilize it, it fell to the left and broke of the left spike too!
