I would place it in loosely packed sphagnum moss when the roots of the new growth start to grow. Hard to explain but it has worked very well for me in the past when I chop off the back bulbs of my oncids. I used lava rock for them but got better results with sphagnum moss. Loosely packed though. The micro environment is better inside the moss than the lava rock. There is going to be less and less additional moisture from the old pbulb and the new roots of the new growth won't be able to supply enough moisture until they are about 2 inches long and two months old. The root grows and we think oh goody. But the velamen takes time to open up it's pores to absorb water. That's why we don't take keikis off the mother plant until the roots are 2inches for oncids and 4 inches for phals. Good job experimenting with this pbulb. As I have said before, there is lots of energy left in old back bulbs. And for further experimentation I would get some of Ray's kelpmax. I saw a difference in root growth when I got a bottle. Worked for me.
