I think taking all your phals on vacation with you shows a rather high level of dedication. You will find a way to make this work.

Haha thanks

Also to the person above who said they love growing their phals in a wet soppy mess.

- Thats because your roots grew into a wet soppy mess and were adapted to it. My phal wasnt grown by me, its massive with a massive root system.

I coudnt figure out the sweet spot for these roots from the previous grower. Everything was too wet. Even a lava rock bark mixture that was drying too slow. I could try an all lava rock mixture. But I figure this experiment will be alot of fun.

This phal is living in indoor humid louisiana.

I think the biggest problem people have when they have phals is that when they go to repot the phals. The root climates are changing dramatically. I've only lost one phal, but have set back many with root loss from thinking I was doing the plant a favor by repotting it. When if I left the root climate alone, everything would have been fine.

Its all a personal growing experience. You can take ideas and general concepts from other people. But ultimately you have to do things first hand and see what happens. I got 2 phals now that get as much light as my catteleya under my flourescents!

If you are in humid Louisiana, I would think that your experiment should work.
