Talking My latest best find (orchid growing accessories)

So I think we all pine for something better in regards to orchid growing accessories. Have you ever thought, "I wish they made (insert item) but more like this (insert suggestion) which would make it super awesome and if I found it I would buy it."

For me, that something I've always wanted was "A BETTER TRAY." I buy a lot of new crosses as seedlings. And, I pot said seedlings in itty bitty clay pots with hydroton. I have to move said seedlings around to water, drain, get more light, etc. I've scoured the internet and I can't tell you how many permutations of "the better tray" I've bought or tried. They always leave something to be desired, be it too shallow, too wobbly, too deep, not enough drainage, etc. I can't tell you how many times I've tried to CAREFULLY move seedlings from an area to another, girding my loins at the inevitable (INSERT VULGAR CURSES, USUALLY IN SPANISH) toppling over of at least one.

I cleaned out my orchid supply section and saw how much money I've spent on these various contraptions, and was determined, yet once again, to find THE BEST TRAY.

So, before this post goes the way of War and Peace, I think I've found it: It is not shallow, it is not wobbly. It drains perfectly, it does not corrode, warp. It holds 6 seedlings at a time, it is heavy so that the seedlings won't move, and provides perfect air circulation. I can buy it online, so I don't have to travel through uncharted lands to get it. (giggle)

It's not made for orchids.

I got the first two trays tonight and they are SUPER DUPER AWESOME. MY BETTER TRAY. FINALLY.

So, if you've read this far (God bless you if you have) what is your "I wish they made a better (insert item), like (insert your suggestion) and why (insert the reason).

Have you found it? Please share.

That tray looks similar to the trays a local orchid seller uses in his GH. His employee will put one on a rolling cart for you to put your picks in until you are done and then he can carry it to the sales desk.
Unless I am more blind than I think, I wish there was a way to see a larger pic of the tray.

A moisture meter for bark. Yes, they have one meant for "orchids" in which you insert it into the "potting mix" and a light tells you when it's time to water. (It's this one here) That wasn't good enough for me! I wanted a meter that could be inserted into either bark OR soil/moss and that could give me a better idea of when it was dry in the middle then a light. Of course I didn't know about the bamboo skewer method until much later, but it works out. I wasn't keen on my cat rubbing his face over all these sticks poking out of my unstable orchids.

Well after a lot of searching I did find something, by the same company no less. And let me tell you, this thing saved a few orchids as I was learning my way into the hobby. I still use it today, though I find I'm not depending on it as I used too. I generally know when it's time to water now, but it has alerted me to orchids staying wet too long and I was able to adjust before any roots rotted. But it will tell me temperature, humidity, moisture, and even light levels (though that doesn't seem to be as accurate). I'm looking forward to using it this winter as it will help tell me if my orchids close to the window are getting too cold in the center. You can find it on this website, but it's quite expensive. I found mine on ebay for $40, but it just doesn't seem like this guy is producing them as fast, if at all. He may be tweaking this model and coming out with something newer and better (I hope so).

I guess this doesn't really qualify as I was comparing an orchid product to another orchid product, but that was my "geez, I wish they made it like this with this feature" moment.

That's great tray! For me it's a 3 foot grow light for my 3 foot window. The big box stores carry 2 and 4 foot lights. I have to special order the 3 foot grow light and go on a driving adventure to pick it up. They didn't even come up the last time I did a Google. If you ever see one online, please let me know.
