I basically agree. All other things being the same, I suppose that an excess of fertilizer for your amount of light < aka, too much nitrogen > .
However, without any changes to my regimen, I have had spikes -- regular skinny spikes with lots of buds, and yet made roots at the base -- and then I have had keikeis begin, only to change into spike with buds, and no roots. I would suppose the mixed hybrid nature of them. Love dendrobiums a lot. They gives bundles of flower spikes for the vase in the house!
Take care, and don't worry. If it wants to bloom, it will begin another spike shortly, or 6 months -- whichever it decides! <grin>
