The "continuous improvement" scaled system really isn't all that subjective. Flower count is recorded, flowers are measured, and the award has a narrative that talks about color, texture, and presentation among other things. An official photo is also taken the day it is awarded. The AOS judges work with a computer program called AQ+ and are able to look up all the details of previous awards and compare the plant they are considering against previously awarded plants of the same hybrid or species. Often you will see a plant nominated, go to the judging table, and quickly returned to it's display. I have a Phal hybrid that has been nominated twice but never awarded. I looked it up in OrchidWiz and there was only one previous award. That plant carried 35 flowers on a single inflorescence! How the heck do you beat that? LOL! I nicknamed my plant The Bridesmaid because I new she would never be the bride!
