When our snow is gone and it quits freezing I'll put my Cyms out
We have broken 114 year records with our cold spring temps and amounts of snow this year. Most of the snow is now gone and finally we are getting some more seasonal days but it has been a very nasty spring. We still have snow piles several feet high in our yard because hubby had to shovel the roof this winter.

It's ok if one day you accidentaly forget to bring them in at night, orchids can take it for a bit. Next week we're gonna have some days in the 70's =].

That's awesome cbuchman! you know i should start collecting rain water myself.

wow silken zone 2b must be some crazy winters!

Our springtime weather here (z9) has been crazy too. Seems like every week the weather encourages us to bring the orchids out of the GH, but around Thursday, here comes another cold front, temps in the low 40s.
Last night at the HOS meeting that was part of the discussion-how many had had to put their plants back into the GH because of the low 40s temps last night and tonight. I have been hesitating and with good reason. I looked into my garden diary and discovered that I usually bring my plants out around mid May. So, plants, you get to stay another week or two (at least).

I brought out some of my large orchids outside on the fire escape....it can be still be on the 50's at night but the cement wall retains some warmth from the sun and there is no more frost....

All the orchids I'm going to put outside have been outside for a few months now.
My area in SoCal quite literally never ever gets frosts.
I've discovered some great things putting them out.
I've discovered that maxillaria tenuifolia can take massive amounts of direct sun. It's pretty much in full direct sun from dawn to dusk now.

My goldfish like to play with dropped cymbidium flowers.

And I even have a phal thats completely un bothered by our cold winters, a few days of no water (mounted), and what I would call too much sun.

Exiting stuff...

yea pretty interesting the toughness and drive to survive in these plants =] seems like every week the temp goes up by a few degrees here in nyc.
Next week we're gonna get a couple of days in 70's and nights seem to be rising to mid 50's which is good. It will be safe to leave the vandas out overnight.

I have a pachong blue that goes outside for the summer along with the rest of my orchids. At this time of year I also bring them in at night. Our night temperatures in the summer are usually only 12. [55 f]
so I put them in our little greenhouse. The cyms are fine outside now.
