Feel free to dumb down advice, I'm not a pro folks. I will submit this picture, of my phal growing what appears to be another orchid atop the flower spike... thoughts on if I should cut this guy off? No roots showing on the new growth. Is there a method or course of action to prompt root growth before cutting it off? This growth has been present for nearly a year... Any help or advice is so very much appreciated and valued. Thank you in advance!
its called a keiki. Normally there should be root growth.
What you can do as an experiment is gently bend ( without snapping ) the stem and securing the keiki in another pot, preferably filled with sphagnum moss. Alternatively you can wrap the base of the keiki with sphag and keep it moist. Either way should stimulate root growth. When the new roots are 2-4 inches long, you can pot up separately
Its a keiki, it is getting nourishment from the mother plant via the spike that is why it is not making any roots of its own for nearly a year....
But you must be patient. It will produce roots and wait until you get five inches of roots and just twist it off the spike and pot it.
