Zygopetilium Blackii backbulb?

Hi All,

I was repotting my zygo (Zygopetilium Blackii) and separated off 1 backbulb that still has roots attached to it. Any ideas as to how I can get/force it to produce a new growth?

This is more of an experiment for me so if it works then great! But if to doesn't than I wont be too heartbroken.

Geez I love experimenting!!! Pot it up in shredded spagnum moss. Hold the pbulb with roots over the pot and then slowly, gently drop in the shredded spag around the dangling roots. Don't pack it down. Once the spag has covered the roots, tap the pot on the table and if it settles put in more spag. What you are trying to do is not injure the roots but place moisture around them. The bbulb should push new growth when it is ready and you are just providing a moist growing environment. But don't keep it wet. Just damp. Give it waremth. light, and air movement. It will take awhile but will produce a new growth. I've done it many many times. Or alternatively you could try mounting it onto some cork bark or a rescue board. I'll post a pic of one. They're easy to make and really work well. basically they are any 3/4 inch thick board which has had numerous holes drilled into it. Place some spagnum moss over the roots gently and wire the bbulb/spag inplace. Good luck and don't give up.

Thanks for the great ideas! I checked it over and it does have a few tabs or active eyes. With your method should they be placed upwards or does it not matter? Any idea as to how long it can take for the new growth to pop up?

Good Luck! Can't offer any advice, except that James M. certainly knows his stuff!! and there is a website dedicated to growing orchids from backbulbs...
