The Greenhouse Effect
With the storm we just had headed our way, I put all my plants in one corner of the covered part of my lanai and put up clear hurricane shutters at the wall section and enough to go halfway along the lanai to block some of the winds. It was very hot in there, even though it wasn't fully closed off. I decided to go out and spray a few times over a day and a half and this morning I found the most interesting thing had happened! A number of plants have big healthy roots about an inch long that weren't there before, two plants have spikes 4-5 inches long that were just nubs the other day and other plants have physically grown by inches! Now I see the benefit of what a real greenhouse would do...hubby's getting scared

Hey if you have the room and $$$ - he should be scared! Being in Florida, you must be able to grow outdoors all year round? For me the difference from the basement to outdoors in the summer is like your greenhouse effect! Unfortunately it only lasts from June to Sept.

Dave: I have grown year round down here, it's always hot and humid. I'd love a greenhouse but I don't see that happening in the near future
Tindomul1of9: They were in there from Sunday afternoon until this morning. I couldn't believe what I was looking at but having half of my lanai closed off with 7 ft tall sheets of metal doesn't look so nice.
I'm going to have to start sending subliminal greenhouse messages to my hubby

Thanks for the testimonial to the power of the greenhouse. Something about the little boost of humidity and they love it. Someday! Till then coldframes work wonders.

He-he...I had forgotten all about this thread! There's been an update! We are in contract to have a sunroom built as an extension of my lanai. It won't be a true greenhouse but more of a controlled environment for the few times that the weather's not cooperating
I'll be posting pics as it progresses.

See my previous post. I have no idea what a "sunroom" is. We don't get that sort of thing here. Is that where an orchid-grower places his/hers sunlamps?
