Any info about this orchid?
Merry Christmas everyone!!
Just wanted to know if any of you have heard of or seen anything about the orchid listed as "Japan Koi Lc. Cattleya" - it's even an odd name, possibly a different labeling "system". It is listed on Ebay and they are asking approx. $350.00 US per flask and a 2-3 stem division for approx. $75.00 US. Here is the picture that they are listing, saying it is a cross of Lc. Magic Bella X NoID.
It is gorgeous, but the blooms look a little "touched up" or something. If this is a true hybrid pattern, then I would think it is worth the price, but when I try to find anything on the 'net about it, the only pics and reference I can find are the pic / info on Ebay.
The distributor is Orchid Dynasty and they are located in Singapore - Any comments about them?
Any leads would be very appreciated.
Again, Happy Holidays and a great New Year!
Steve

I couldn't find anything in OrchidWiz on it. It certainly is a distinctive color pattern!

If you look closely at any of this persons listings you will find that alot of what he lists are not actual, valid crosses.
Lc. Magic Bella X NoID is and always will be a NoID not Japan Koi Lc. Cattleya. Another example are ones he has/had listed are of phals Violacea Electric Blue Alba, Japanese Tetras Koi Alba, Violacea Bimetric Indo Salmon. None of these names are valid and they are not listed with the RHS and you will only find them in conjunction with his listings.
Personally I would question whether any of the crosses he lists would look anything like what he has posted. Certainly if these crosses were as rare and unique you would find something, somewhere on them and people would be dying to get their hands on them and talking about them. Not the case.
Additionally you would need to have an import permit and phyto permit to legally import these into the US. While he does provide a CITIES permit he does not provide Phyto.
As to the worth of his plants, that would be entirely up to you and if you were willing to spend that kind of money on a NoID with the very good probablility of it getting confiscated upon importation without the proper permits.
This is all just my opinion and my

The coloration is pretty, and it DOES look like the fish of the same name. ( koi ) But considering the problems with it's name, I, myself would NOT be willing to buy this particular orchid. BettyE.

Steve, just some additional info to ponder over.
If you check this sellers feedback the last one was a negative from a buyer in the US who never received their plant(s). The seller states something to a problem with their account. But of note, there is no additional info posted by the buyer stating that they ever received anything. Looking at their feedback and the amount of sellers they buy from I would think that this particular buyer would have posted a follow-up if the transaction had been completed successfully. To me that sends a red flag along with the postings themselves (misleading info and pics) that all is and would not be right with the seller and his products.
By the time this plant is grown enough for you to see if it is in fact the crossing that he states it would be too late to do anything about it nevermind the fact he is out of the country. In my mind there is just way too much that could go wrong with this.
Your better off dealing with US vendors and ones that you know or know of that you would have some recourse if the need arose.
Judi
PS. Happy Holidays to you and yours

Even aside from Judi's very good points, IMO it's BS from the get-go; google images of Blc. Majestic Light and think about what someone with minimal photoshop skills could do in about 5 minutes with a photo of a good M.L...
And assuming you do get plants and they actually bloom true what's the further value to you, since you can't show a NOID for awards, all progeny will be NOID, and it may very well be patented to prevent clonal propagation? If it's really pretty and cost you $500+ but is virused, would you still keep it in your collection?

The price is ridiculous. I had an LC Magic Bell and it had these markings in yellow. I have never seen an orchid that has that deep coral colour.

If the seller actually flowered this orchid, I would bet he would be selling it like hotcakes and it would be in all the literature. I would stick with reputable dealers/growers here. There are scamms by the millions out there because there are suckers by the millions. If this is indeed a viable catt then wait and it will show up here soon. Betcha it won't.

Merry Christmas Eve everyone -
Wow - everyone makes some great points. I really had no intention of purchasing this plant, but wondered if anyone had seen it or heard of it elsewhere, because, as stated above, if so, then I would be more likely to believe the coloration.
As far as "would you purchase a NoID" - yes, I would and have - for my personal collection I have no issue with NoID plants. For a show plant, it would be useless I know. And yes, the price is ridiculous, but again, I was asking about the plant simply because I could not believe the coloration. If you read my original post, I was questioning the flowers - the pics made me think "photo-shop" right away - that was the reason for the original post.
And the Asia connection is too risky for me also. I had not read the feedback (wish I had) but again, I wasn't really going to purchase this, just wanted to know if there was any other info out there - it seems all the info I needed was in the ad itself!
Also, no I would NOT keep a virused plant in my collection - regardless of what I paid. My collection is much more costly than this one plant - but not sure where all these prices are coming from - the $500.00 is way over what this guy is asking for a plant - even the flasks are cheaper than that, so not sure where that figure came from. But again, I really was not ordering this, just asking about the possibility this color formation existed.
The Blc. Majestic Light is a great lead - I had not heard of it and the pics are great - and I don't even like splash formation orchids! I also looked at Lc. Magic Bell - it is really nice for a yellow and white - the formation is very close to the one shown for 'Koi'.
Thanks for picking up on all this - again I am always amazed at the perceptiveness of the board members - you guys have just added to my amazement!
Have a great holiday!
Steve
