new phal

Hi

I just got this phal and it has a few problems but I dont know what all I have going on so here are a few pics let me know what you see. Also I think it might have a pest but dont know what it is there some like web stuff on the bottom of the pot with little black spots in the web stuff. Any way I took a pic of the bottom of the pot but you cant see it very well.

So here are the pics let me know what you see.

Well, first off, congrats in your new orchid!!! It's a beauty!!!!

Second, I noticed some of the blooms are peloric, meaning the inside petals haven't open all the way. Perhaps over time they will, but you may ultimately end up with a peloric Phal. That's not a bad thing!!!! Some people love them and others hate them, and everything in between. I have a few that I love as well! It's just genetics, not an issue.

I don't see any issues at first, but the webs would make me suspect spider mites at first. What do the undersides of the leaves look like? Are the spotted or did colored in any way?

Only other things I can think of is the top of those leaves might be cleaned off. There's a white on it that makes me suspect foliage fertilizer was used. Also, does the pot (not the plastic insert) have drainage? If it doesn't be absolutely sure all water has drained from the plastic before putting it back in. The roots don't want wet or drowning, just evenly humid and a tad moist to dry (repeat cycle).

Let me take another look at those pics and see what I can see. If I see anything else, I'll post again.

I guess I'm a bit unclear what your concerns are other than the web you found with the black stuff in it.

If your other concern is the bottom if the aerial roots you had two pics of, I'm just thinking they might have attached to something in the greenhouse and were torn when being removed for shipping. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's my educated (and sometimes in-educated, lol...) guess.

As you said it, the picture doesn't show at all what you are refering to.
Take a close look at those black spots on the web and make sure they are not moving around.
Whatever they are, I would just wipe them off. They are probably (and most likely) just regular spiders that do not do any harm. Many of my orchids have them and it's actually good because they eat other bugs in the house.

By the way, I see that your potting mix look rather dry. might want to consider a good watering soon?

Ya its spider mites I looked under the leaves and there was a wab Great just my luck. So do I just wash them off with warm water. I have never had a pest.

i know it needs to be watered but I am going to do it in the morning it is to late now

By "wab", what do you mean? Spider mites can only be seen under a loupe or other similar thing. If you mean a spider web or cocoon type thing, then I doubt it's spider mites and just plain spiders, which are no big deal.

Spider mites are detected by the naked eye as brown or dark discoloration. Use a plain white paper towel and rub the discoloration. If you see specks of it on the paper towel then it's spider mites. Otherwise, it's other potential issues all together. Please let us know which it is so we can attempt to assist!
