Wilsonara Spike Broke! - how to get it to re-spike? Female
Default Wilsonara Spike Broke! - how to get it to re-spike?

My ultimate favorite orchid is my Wilsonara (odontoglossum X cochlioda X oncidium). It was originally unhealthy, but now I have finally nursed it back to great health. It even had a bloom spike that was 4-5 inches long! (I've waited 2.5 years for it to bloom) I was so excited! But... this morning I got up to bad news. My cat chewed off the spike!!!!!!
Do I have to wait until a new bulb grows, develops, and produces a spike? Or is that ANY chance that the current bulb can produce a second spike? Is there anything I can do to initiate that? Perhaps temperature changes, hormones, etc.?? I'll do anything!! Please help!!

I hate it when that happens! I have had that happen many times over the years. I'm getting really pissed off at an asco that I bought in spike. It dropped it's spike and here it is a year and a half later. No spike! These are supposed to be easy to bloom!

anybody can buy a plant in flower.....its only a few people that have the patience, maybe a bit of Irish luck too, to get a rebloom. You are already past that stage, so you deserve a pat on the back !

I agree with orchidsarefun above. It seems you are doing most everything right. It's just a matter of time now.

if you really want to force it to respike Keiki Paste should do the trick i can send you a tiny bit if you'd like to try it and dont mind paying shipping or you can buy it online i use this company KultureShock
there relatively cheap and also offer a keiki spray that works better in some cases.

To use the paste to induce flowering you have to apply the paste while the plant is still in reproductive mode otherwise it will grow keiki's instead of new spikes but if you just broke the spike off you should have about a month before applying the paste will induce Keiki's so its definately worth a try

also you can induce orchids to flower without the need for a cold shock by spraying them with a 1000ppm Benzylamino Purine Solution before a spike starts to grow.its also available form kultureshock if anyone needs help with the actual applying it just ask i have tons of experience in that regards. and i do have a tiny bit of Benzylamino Purine i could share as well but probably only enough for 3 people so if would like some just let me know and i'll share with the first 3 people to ask

I don't think it's likely to get another spike until new growth reaches the proper stage.

Right wabbit is correctomundo. The wilsonara will put out two new growths and if you do what's right, you will get double the pleasure. And if you do it really right, you should be able to get two spikes on each new growth. And cat stew tastes pretty good.

My Wilsonara "Halloween" always spikes twice from the same bulb, one on each side of the bulb...when it used to flower....of course it's current condition is horrible....but it just won't die...(don't yell at me...I know It's not right, but I can't make the darn thing happy.....)
