Default Hanging Display Ideas and Coryanthes

Good news everyone!

Norman's orchids now has blooming size coryanthes! I want to get one and a few stanhopeas but I will need something to hang them on.I also want to hang some of my current orchids. I don't have very much space. Any suggestions?

BTW, is there anything I should be aware of for caring for a coryanthes? I know the basics for it.

When my plants are inside I use a lot of tie and pants-hanger things as racks for smaller plants; I put cup hooks and eye bolts in ceilings and windowframes to hang the racks from. Bigger plants just get hung right on the hooks/bolts. If I need to hang something and don't have any pot/basket hangers handy, I make my own with pliers and galvanized steel or aluminum wire. Hope this helps!

Oh, and I know very little about growing Coryanthes, but one thing I'm pretty sure I've heard/read from several sources is that in the wild they tend to grow in or encourage ant nests and so like very acidic conditions at their roots. Sphagnum (live or dead), redwood bark, and granite are good media for acid-loving orchids. Maybe you already know this, though...

Nat, what do you mean by small plants? Also, the hooks might not be able to take the load of the orchids I am planning to buy but thanks anyways for the info =).

Any other information will be highly appreciated.

Hello everyone!

I saw a few online things that might work but have some concerns. If I use hanging brackets, is there any way to fill up the drilled holes if I decide to replace them? Also, are there any very tall z racks? I want to make sure that the orchids are over my current collection and get the most light.

Thanks!

Kevinator:
not sure of the room you have, but I have deep enough windows that I mounted 1.5" wooden dowels (like a clothes closet bar) in them and was able to hang about 7 pots on it. They are very stout and will take a lot of weight. If you don't have that access, perhaps a wire rack (buy one at Target) such as they use in industrial or kitchen storage and adapt it to the orchids. I also have one of these and you can adjust the shelving to fit the height of the orchids; fluorescent bulbs sit on the top. Mine is 18" wide, 48" long and 60" high with 5 shelves. I have hung orchids from my living room pole lamp so I know about the "little or no space" issue. Hope this help & Congrats on the new arrival!
