I've never had any of my orchids do this, anyone know what's going on?
I'm not sure how well you can see it in the picture, but it looks like my Phal is growing leaves off it side instead of the top like it usually does. Can anyone help me figure out what exactly it's doing and why?

Looks like the start of a spike to me as well. If it does turn into leaves then it's a basil keiki (baby) which can be left to give a second crown.
I've mistaken basil keiki for spikes in the early stages before but I do think you've got a spike.

I can see the picture very well. As far as "what I think it is:" In the upper middle, a little to the left, the growth is going down, thus I believe it to be a root. The growth below that one, and in the middle is a spike. Your phaleanopsis looks healthy & happy! This is my opinion...for what it's worth...BettyE

All of the above is right....
the growth pointing down is a root; and the two pointing upwards are spikes....Congratulations.....post pictures of your blooms in 3 months

Thank you everyone, a spike didn't occur to me because most of my phals have already bloomed for the year. Either way basil keiki or spike I'm definitely looking forward to what it does.

Now only if I could remember what color the flowers on this one are. Looks like I'll get to see. Definitely going to take pictures when it blooms.

It's looking less like a spike, and more like a new set of leaves growing from the side of my phal.

When I clicked on the picture & made it larger, I could see it much more clearly. Looks like a broken off spike on the right of a new root, which is going down ( or trying to ) Just my opinion...BettyE
