Lots of cattleyas without sheaths
Hey guys!
So I my cattleyas are finally budding! These are my firstbuds in cattleyas and I have 4 plants with multiple buds each!
Anyways. All but one didn't get sheaths. They went straight to buds. Is there a reason for this? An environmental factor possibly?

Genetics. Some species produce no sheaths, some produce sheaths and bloom in the fall from green sheaths, some in the late winter to spring from brown sheaths, and some from double sheaths. So really, it all depends on the parentage, especially with complex hybrids, because there is a lot of stuff at play. My Ctt. Jeweler's Gem first bloomed from no sheath as the growth developed, and now, a couple of growths later, it has a sheath, even though it will most likely bloom at the same time as before.

That just seems to happen some times. I don't think it has anything to do with the environment. And it doesn't mean that orchid won't have sheaths next time. Enjoy.

I have a catt that produced two pbulbs this year (at the same time) and one had a sheath and the other did not. Both sets of buds in each growth are opening right now. So no worries!

I agree with Tucker, it's a hit or miss thing to which I see no rhyme or reason.
I have had both occur on the same plant as well.

Some catts get sheaths, others don't, and some will sometimes get sheaths, and sometimes not - I have one complex hybrid that gets both bifoliate and unifoliate growth - the bifoliate growth gets spikes with out sheaths, and the unifoliate ones get sheaths first.
Another I have has not previously had sheaths, but this year has a number of them, tho no sign of buds in any of them yet.
