I have a liking for the "mule-ear" class of Oncidiums. One I have been unable to find that was available 20 years ago is Oncidium stramineum. Is anyone else familiar with it and know where one might be located? Any information is appreciated. Thanks.
I have an Oncidium carthagenense another mule ear...no pbulbs and grows tall ...the orchid you are searching Oncidium stramineum can be bought for $25 at Santa Barbara Orchid estate(you can order it online or call them)
They have had it listed for a long time. They list a lot of plants that they don't really have available. When they say <inquire> in their catalog it usually means that at one time they had it but no longer do. But thanks for your effort to help me locate one.
I visited Waldor Orchids and saw a "mule ear" but since I have no interest in them I do not recall the exact Oncidium species it was.
You might give them a call and ask
Try looking for the orchid under its correct name Trichocentrum stramineum, the mule ear Oncidium were recalssified several years ago.
The plant is far from extinct, but has very limited commercail appeal. I sell several hybrids and customers show only mild iinterest. As a result there is litte incentive for dealers to stock more.
