MSU Fertilizer & coconut husk medium
Default MSU Fertilizer & coconut husk medium

Hi guys,

So after numerous attempts and consistent fail, I've decided to take my phal out of S/H and back into coconut husk. Just curious if anyone knows what kind of ppm I should be using to fertilize with? I still have a bottle left of what I bought from Ray's site, the well water mix. Thanks!

I have my phals in coconut husk chips mixed with a little charcoal and it has worked well for me. During the summer growing season I use fertilizer at 1/2 the recommended strength but I don't water the plant with it. I just mist the fertilizer onto the leaves, the exposed roots and the top of the medium so the plant really isn't getting very much. If I was going to water the plant with it, I would use less, probably 1/4 the recommended dosage. I'm sorry I don't figure ppm on my fertilizer. Good luck.

The potting medium has very little to do with the concentration of nutrients needed.

I recommend 125 ppm N for S/H growing because it seems to work without issues. That happens to be the recommendation of the folks at MSU that developed the fertilizers (they arrived at that level the same way...it works), and they grew nothing in s/h culture.

I use CHC and feed at a strength of 1/2 gram per litre at every watering with no flushing. I mainly grow Masdevallia and have others such as Dens, Ceologyne. I have been very happy with results, I didn't have the nerve to stick to the Greencare 125 ppm N recommended dose but do grow in the UK which is very different from most of the US.
