I cant wait to try this! I was wondering if anyone knew if a Masdevallia Erinacea would be happy in this setup? The growing notes say cool to warm growing.
Sorry... one more question. You think this would work with other kinds of cool growing orchids? Like miniature Pleurothallids, dryadillas, PORROGLOSSOMS!?
I know this is an older thread, but it's been really useful to me. I've just purchased my first masdie, and I'm looking forward to trying this method. For those who were looking for fish bowls, I found some with 3.5" opening at Walmart in the candle section. These are the best ones I've found so far.
My dracula grew well in its glass bowl. It even put out a spike...I thought it was a root so I didn't do anything about it. The spike grew down into the pebbles at the bottom of the bowl and rotted away. I think masdies are much better suited for bowl culture because their spikes grow upwards.
Unfortunately I don't have any masdies and draculas anymore because last summer they all died when the power went out.

Another idea for anyone looking for glass containers with small openings is to have a look at discount stores for small kitchen storage/'cookie jars'. In stores over here I can get ones with the clip on type glass lids, I just undo the metal ring and take the lid off it. I have them in a sort of square shape, round and also in a circular shape with a flat front and back like a traditional cookie jar if that makes sense.

Orchid dreamer you could try sitting your net pot of your drac inside a larger timber or wire basket, lining the sides with something and filling in around it with moss. That way the spike can still get out the bottom. It's not perfect but it might be worth a try. Also if you can get old mans beard tillandsia hang heaps of that around it, the air moving through the damp tillandsia is great for cooling and humidity.
