Growing masdies/draculas in glass bowls?

I just made my net basket as I could not buy one the right size. Well it is with larger holes than black pots from store, but I hope its still going to work.

You lightly pack the moss in the net pot (or some version there of if you have to make it yourself) around the roots. Then the net pot goes into the fish bowl with the hydroton and sphagnum moss.

Most Masdie's like their feet a bit more moist than other orchids, primarily because of where they can be found growing in nature. However, that really depends upon what type you get or the hybrid's parentage.

Really, the key to this is to get humidity into the bowl that gets trapped by the sphagnum moss and goes into the roots. It allows the sphagnum moss around the roots to dry out a bit while still getting humidity and moisture.

OK, as promised, here is one of my two masdie's in pots/modified from RJ's.




As you can see in the close up, the water line is fairly close to the bottom of the pot in my set up, but I never allow it to touch. Also, there are slats in my pot that I cut to allow the moisture in.

If you do not know what a net pot is, I suggest you going to RePotme.com or other orchid supply online vendors and searching their pots for them. They are basically a fairly wide mesh plastic pot. But if you go to one of these online stores you will see what they are for yourself visually and it may be easier for you to understand what they are.

these sure are fun to put together and watch em grow!! I think Im up to about 20 of these little jar worlds. Cant find my heavy duty little fishy bowls anymore.
I have an Aganax growing in one of these now and its decided to spike with 4 buds for me not the 30 It had from the greenhouse but 4 buds are victory for me!!!

I used chunky bark in this one and no basket .oops. Going to have to dig him out. Thats the reason for the basket is to get them out so you dont tear them up if you have to repot them..I like to take to take them out and look at them anyway.

Great way to grow masdys. I grow mine in an orchidarium but can't get them to bloom.

Is there really a need for the clay balls in the bowls? My masdies are doing fine in canning jars with the roots in moss supported by netting. The water level in the jar is one inch below the moss/roots but I see no use for the balls that are in the bottom of the pot.

No reason, I did a similar version to yours and it works just fine. If you fill it with mods though, it's like a modified s/h to get moisture wicked upwards.
