Question Distinguishing between different orchid genera or species.....

How do you do it? Do you do it at all?

Do you use the same color label for each species or genera you grow?

I grow only a few genera and a few species within each genera, so I thought it would be a good idea to have like a quick visual aid to distinguish the plants. To that end, I bought some pink labels (yeah pink!).. The manufacturer sells 8 other different colors of labels (I bought the 6 inch x 3/4 inch labels and they are good quality). The only issue that I'm having is that the company only sells in bulk sizes?

I was wondering, does anyone use different colored labels for different species or genera you grow?

What is your coding system?

Actually a really good idea with the label colors for different generas. I haven't thought of anything that different, but I dont have that many. I just keep mine of each type together. All the Catts/hybrids in one spot (outside right now), all the phals on a windowsill, etc.

I keep mine grouped together by cultural needs. I have info on all my plants in binders, which are organized by alliances/species. So since I have both phals. and angraecoids, they have different binders. For the hybrids I have info on the parent species. I need to consult these quite frequently, but it does help to figure out when something doesn't seem quite right. I do the same for the onc. alliance, paphs, pleurothallids etc. I also have a calendar on which I note when different plants are watered, fertilized, ph, and tds. It sounds a bit neurotic, but it helps, and once the system is set up, it actually does not take extra time.

Pee Wee,

I primarily grow Cymbidiums and differentiate within the one genus with white labels for Standards, Green labels for Novelty/Miniature and yellow for Species. Other genera I tend to grow together as cultural reasons require, and do not use different color labels.
