Ross, I have seen this happen for the last year in my orchidarium. My Slc. Mini Beau that I mounted in there does this all the time. Grows roots till they reach around 6-9 inches, and then stops. A new green tip might form axilary to the original or the a totally new root will start. The entire time the plant is growing new roots, loosing root tips, and growing leaves. I'm also happy to report that it is in bud!!
I've also seen this activity with my Angraecum scottianum in the same vivarium as well as with my Bulbophyllum dearei (again in the same viviarium/orchidarium). To me, so long as the plants keep growing Im happy.

Thanks for the response, Tindo. Mine are definitely happy, I was just curious what would make that happen. I'm looking forward to the pics when it opens

Just to follow up....Cloud's told me the following....when I asked why my new Brassia's green tips are shriveling up:
"It's not uncommon for the roots outside the pot to shrivel since you don't have the humidity in your home like we do here in the greenhouse. There are lots of roots inside the pot, so your spike shouldn't be effected at all. If you want to try and encourage the aerial roots, you will probably need to mist around the base of the plant on a daily basis and/or increase the humidity in your growing environment."

Guess we were on the right track....
Have a good day!

That makes total sense to me. It matches up with my experience. The 'chids that have stopped their root growth have roots out in the air that is quite dry right now. Thanks Helen.
