I have a question about Hybrid nomenclature... Male
Default I have a question about Hybrid nomenclature...

My question is, is it possible to name a cross, even if you didn't make it? I have two unnamed V. Mimi Palmer hybrids that I would like to name. Even if I could name them, how would I go about doing so?

The hybrids in question are:

V. (Mimi Palmer 'Teo Boon Hian' x coerulea)
V. (Mimi Palmer 'Teo Boon Hian' x Fuchs Delight)

I wanna name the first one V. King Kamehameha or V. Spellbinder, and the second V. Sunspot or V. Cherry Blossom.

Oh, and just a quick request for those of you that have orchid whiz...would you check to see if those hybrids have been named/registered? I just wanna make sure. Sorry for asking, but I don't have the software.

Thanks.

Per AQ Plus and Sanders, neither of these hybrids has been registered.

Yes, you can name a hybrid even though you didn't make the original cross. This, of course, depends on doing research to find potential hybridizer, etc. Start with grower from whom you got the plant.

The registration process is defined at the RHS website:
The International Orchid Register | Royal Horticultural Society

Basically just confirming what cneos said:

It appears neither hybrid has been registered, per OrchidWiz and RHS website.

You can register it, if it has flowered, and if you get permission from the originator or they can't be found.

You will need to choose different names for the second cross. Sunspot and Cherry Blossom are already used within the Vanda group. King Kamehameha and Spellbinder are not.

And here's a link that takes you more directly to the registration instructions: Plant-registration/Orchids

Thanks for the info, guys.

I got both plants from Ty at Plantio La Orquidea, when he brought them to some of the shows here in Tampa. I'll send him an E-mail or call him to see if he knows the origins of either plant.

PaphMadMan, I've decided to call the second cross "Pink Phoenix" instead, and I'm gonna call the first "Spellbinder." Even if I can't get them named officially, I'll just refer to them as such. It's easier than having to spell out their entire parentage.
