Rooting Hormone and lanolin?
Default Rooting Hormone and lanolin?

Browsing some old copies of "Orchid", I came across a brief mention of using rooting Hormone and lanolin on recently cut off back bulbs to get them to root and start a new plant. It referenced an ever older copy (Feb 2000) as having more info on this. I checked the older copy, and -of course,- no info. Checked the next month after the reference and there was no correction mentioned (Q&A column)

I'm assuming the hormone is mixed with the lanolin as lanolin is difficult to wash off. Has anyone here heard / tried this? if so, what proportion of hormone to lanolin?

I recently trimmed and repotted a bunch of 1970's-ish catts for someone, and kept a few of the back bulbs for myself. (YES, I WILL work for orchid scraps!)

Then I read that teaser, and was hoping someone here might be aware of it.
Thanks in advance,
Mike

well I did a search - from my limited reading of the search results, it seems lanolin is an ingredient in keiki paste.

I got several possibly relevant results searching by - lanolin orchid backbulbs

lanolin orchid backbulbs - Google Search

Just mix up a dab of the powder with, it cant really be specific on quantity ...I used to use this on dayliliy blooms to help hold bloom a little longer so pollen could take on some that were difficult to cross...I just guessed and it will most likley not take much for what you want after all a dusting on a cutting is enough so it really dosent need to be that much

Conjuay,
I have not tried this but on the following site they talk about using a product called KeikiRoot to get roots on backbulbs of cattleyas. Keiki root is a lanolin base with hormones. I have used the KeikiGrow with good results, I have a 'crop' of keikis growing right now on my phals.

Here's the link:

Plant Hormones Canada

They have info about the stuff and its use.

Hope that helps.
Stephen

I have a similar thread on the beginners board, using a product called Olivia's Cloning solution. I paint this solution on the base of seedlings and it does seem to generate strong new root growth. The sister product (Olivia's rooting gel) is a direct replacement for the more usual rooting powders. I used it for cutting and found it worked better than traditional rooting powders with "no burn" of the cuttings. Tony
